G. Dep recently opened up to Hynaken and E$$O on the BagFuel podcast about his mixed feelings when he first heard Lil Wayne‘s 2018 single “Uproar” from Tha Carter V.
The track, co-produced by Swizz Beatz and Avenue, uses the same sample as Dep‘s 2001 hit “Special Delivery“. However, it doesn’t sample the record directly—it samples The Moog Machine’s “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” in a similar way.
At first, the Harlem rapper wasn’t happy: “I was mad! I was like: ‘Yo, Wayne, what happened, man?’ Why would they make a single off of a single?”. Even more frustrating for Dep was the fact that he didn’t get paid for “Uproar“, since it didn’t sample “Special Delivery” itself.
Nonetheless, after some time, his perspective changed: “After a while, I was like: ‘This is kinda dope.'” He now sees the track as a tribute to his work and appreciates the attention it brought back to his song.
G. Dep even dropped his own remix, “Deproar“, completing the full circle from frustration to admiration for Weezy‘s hit! Wayniacs, do you still play “Uproar“?
